coverblackAnswering mailbag questions largely defending the DCCU and first reactions to the Suicide Squad cast photo.

This episode was recorded in two segments, the first just hours after watching Avengers: The Age of Ultron then as that was about to be published, David Ayer released our first look at the cast of Suicide Squad in costume, driving Doc to skip sleep, sanity, and stability to serve some speedy reactions in a subsequent second session.

Some of the topics in this episode:

  • Reaction to: What if Man of Steel was in color?
  • Will Superman ever become a boyscout?

  1. In regards to the writing on Deadshot’s costume, it seems like it’s referencing scripture that talks about Jesus being the “light” and the “way”:

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:16

    Mixed with:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

But, I’m not as familiar with Deadshot to know why or if that’s even correct.

    Great episode!

    • Thanks for listening!

Yep, I know the “I am the way, the truth, and the life” rendering, but I wasn’t sure if “I am the Light – The Way”, being in a different order and omitting “Truth” made it a reference to something else.

That said, sharpshooters and remixed scripture seem to go hand-in-hand in media, In Saving Private Ryan, Private Jackson would say what has come to be known as the “Sniper’s Prayer”:

“Be not that far from me, for trouble is near; haste Thee to help me. Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight. My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.”

It’s basically Psalm 22:11, followed by Psalm 144:1-2, concluding with Psalm 25:2.

I’m mainly familiar with Deadshot through Gail Simone’s Secret Six and don’t recall Deadshot being particularly religious, but he always had a code. Come to think of it, that tongue-in-cheek dark-comedy series revolved around the afterlife.

  2. Haha, listener Kevin pointed out that Malcolm McDowell is not Malcom Gladwell and did not write “Blink” or “Outliers.” Yep, my mistake, the actor’s name just rolls of my tongue! 😛
