How To Pronounce Gal Gadot


How to pronounce Gal Gadot. She is Israeli and not French so the “T” is not silent, but it isn’t as aspirated (or breathy) as in American English.

Gadot does not rhyme with dot.
Gadot does not rhyme with depot, merlot, or escargot.
Gadot sounds closer to boat or dote.

  1. Nobody knows how to say Gal Gadot, and as a fellow Israeli of hers. I am frankly, affronted and shocked people keep insisting the T is actually silent when it’s not.

Well, to be fair, most Americans are at least familiar with the play “Waiting for Godot,” and the pronunciation of the titular character’s name as “Guh-doh.” So the assumption or reflex to pronounce her name like that is understandable. It is also evocative of “Bardot” which is what my mind immediately went to before I learned she was Israeli and it likely wasn’t pronounced that way.

    I expect that as the release nears and we hear her name uttered more and more, people will catch on, of not for this film then definitely for the Wonder Woman release. I mean, how many people know how to pronounce “Chiwetel Ejiofor”? And that dude was nominated for an Oscar.
